From Paintings to Bed drapings: Primary Bedroom detail reveal

Hello, y'all!

Before we officially dive into all things nursery design (there is so much in the works, and I can't wait to share it all with y'all!), I thought it was finally time to share our "finished" primary bedroom. I put "finished" in quotation marks because is any space ever truly complete? I'd still love to add more artwork in a few corners that aren't pictured and an area rug at the foot of the bed someday.

When designing our bedroom, my main goal was to create a calm, cozy retreat while taking inspiration from French château interiors—especially my favorite YouTube channels, The Chateau Diaries and How To Renovate A Chateau. In these historic homes, bed canopies are still very much a tradition, as are coordinating fabrics throughout the room. One of my favorite things about these old estates is their effortless blend of modern, vintage, and antique pieces. I love imagining generations of families adding their own personal touches while honoring the heirloom they inherited.

That layered mix brings a sense of history and warmth to what is otherwise a brand-new home. The nightstands, beautifully refinished by Second Wind in Hartsville, were a thrift-store find from the 1940s or '50s. The trunk at the foot of the bed and the needlepoint pillow both belonged to my Memaw—the trunk was her hope chest, and the pillow was made from an old piano bench cover that she embroidered. Of course, the real showstopper is the custom fabric drapery, which I'll share more about below! The lamps are from Amazon and include one of my favorite features—built-in charging ports (my "hotel feature")—while still having a timeless, traditional silhouette.

For the custom fabric, I wanted to take inspiration from classic French toile patterns. But instead of scenes from the French countryside or distant lands, I wanted each illustration to reflect the things that bring us joy and tell our story. I created a unique vignette for each of our dogs, one featuring my paint easel with our engagement painting on it, and another showcasing Alec's prized deer. The process started with monochromatic original watercolor paintings. I then digitized each illustration and transformed it into a seamless repeating pattern. After triple-checking my measurements (and doing more math than I ever expected), I ordered the fabric through Spoonflower. Armed with YouTube tutorials, determination, and maybe a little naïve confidence, I sewed every pleat, curtain panel, and piece of drapery myself. While my mom is an incredibly talented seamstress, I was determined to figure it out on my own. By the end of the project, I could even thread my sewing machine's bobbin without pulling up YouTube every time! A huge thank-you goes to my husband for building the wooden canopy frame and helping install everything—it was definitely a team effort.

To add more storage for our books and collections, I repurposed the vintage bookcase I've been hauling around since my very first apartment. Over the years it's been gray, green, and now blue! I built a simple base from scrap wood so it would extend all the way to the ceiling, giving it the look of a custom built-in and the grand scale you often see in historic estates.
